Interview Questions

These questions were used specifically for certain themes explored throughout the project such as that of culture shock, the concept of home, identity as well as effects of the city.

Home Based:

  1. Why are you studying abroad?
  2. Where did you live before coming to Toronto?
  3. How different is it from your home or where you had come from originally?
  4. Do you go back home often? If so why?
  5. What do you think makes a location home?
  6. Do you ever think of Toronto as ‘home’? If not what do you consider it to be and why?
  7. Were there any difficult decisions you had to make before coming to Toronto?
  8. How did moving from that location to here affect you psychologically?

Culture Shock:

  1. Did you experience any form of culture shock when you first landed? If so what was it, what helped you through it and why do you think you experienced it?

City Effects Based:

  1. What were your initial thoughts upon first landing in Canada for University?
  2. Have any of those thoughts changed as you got to see and learn more about the city?
  3. Where do you live now in Toronto and what do you think of it?
  4. Favourite place in the city? Why?
  5. What do you like or dislike about the city?
  6. What about the city is most significant to you?
  7. How do you think Toronto would be considered unique?
  8. What about Toronto do you think would be so attractive to other international students?
  9. Has there been someone to help introduce you to the city and what it offers? If so who?
  10. Have you explored the city on your own? If so got any stories to tell?
  11. What have you seen in Toronto that you think is unique to the city?

Identity:

  1. What are your thoughts on being an international student?
  2. Do you think yourself to be in a unique position as an international student?
  3. What pressures do you think an international student would feel?
  4. What advice do you have towards newer international students thinking of coming to Toronto?
  5. What about Toronto has affected you most deeply?
